Putting the Visual Together: Assembling Cultural Icons

The Putting Together the Visual installation functions as a practical and conceptual tool for developing visual thinking skills.

As a participatory art experience, the installation explores the relationship between visual perception of cultural icons, spatial cognition, and active spectatorship. Situated between art installation and interactive workshop, it explores how art engages the viewer and stimulates the development of visual-spatial intelligence through processes of observation, reconstruction, and experimentation. The icons represented in the installation create a narrative of personal experiences with nature and different cultures, capable of attaining universal dimensions.

Thus, the intimate becomes a shared symbol, and the artwork transcends its original context to engage in a dialogue with diverse cultures. In this manner, the artist not only depicts an individual reality but also constructs a shared visual language that allows the viewer to recognize themselves within universal human experiences.

The installation consists of ten (10) mixed-media circular acrylic paint on wood sculptures. All works are 1 inch deep and painted on both sides, resulting in a total of twenty paintings designed to encourage circulation around and between the displayed pieces, providing multiple perspectives and viewing experiences. A cylindrical pedestal positioned in front of the paintings will hold puzzles that visitors are invited to assemble as part of the interactive experience.

In the context of technologically driven visual cultures, puzzle building slows down the rapid consumption of images commonly associated with digital media. Instead of passively scrolling through visual content, participants engage in sustained attention and tactile interaction. The fragmented image demands close observation and interpretive decision-making, encouraging deeper forms of visual literacy and critical engagement.

Within the Putting Together the Visual installation, puzzle building therefore operates not simply as a recreational activity, but as a contemporary artistic and pedagogical strategy for cultivating visual thinking skills.

Cuba and Puerto Rico are...

The histories of Cuba and Puerto Rico have many similarities. The Puerto Rican poet Lola Rodríguez de Tió expressed it in 1893: “Cuba and Puerto Rico are the wings of the same bird, they receive flowers and bullets in the very same heart”

Flamboyán, Caribbean Umbrella

In Cuba and Puerto Rico, the flamboyán displays its splendor as a witness of the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.
